Shirley Heights Lookout
About This Restaurant
Overlooking English and Falmouth Harbours from within Antigua's National Parks, this iconic hilltop venue offers one of the most atmospheric dining experiences on the island. Guests can choose between the intimate surroundings of the restored 18th-century building indoors or the open-air terrace, where the panoramic view stretches south to Guadeloupe and south-west to the still-active volcano on Montserrat on clear days.
The Menu
The kitchen puts the emphasis firmly on Caribbean cuisine, with a wonderful selection of local dishes alongside familiar world staples. The barbecue is a particular highlight — a hearty, mouthwatering spread with a generous variety of dishes that draws visitors and residents alike. Shirley Heights Lookout also offers catering for private functions held elsewhere on the island, with a broad range of local cuisine available on request.
Sunday Sessions
The most celebrated time to dine at Shirley Heights is Sunday afternoon and evening, when the venue hosts what is widely regarded as the biggest and best weekly party on the island. Tables fill from around 4pm as guests arrive to secure their spot for sunset, with a steel band providing the soundtrack. From 7pm the music shifts to soca, reggae and calypso, and the barbecue comes into its own as the evening progresses. The entrance fee is EC$25 (approximately US$10), which covers the entertainment and the incomparable view.
Setting and Atmosphere
The Lookout occupies a beautifully restored section of the old Shirley Heights military complex — a ridge of largely ruined fortifications whose restoration began in 1981. The blend of historic stonework, open-air terraces and sweeping harbour views gives the dining experience a character that is entirely unique to this corner of Antigua.
Reservations are advisable, particularly during peak season and ahead of the popular Sunday sessions.
