Middle Ground Trail
About
Set within the historic landscape surrounding English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour, the Middle Ground Trail is a wonderfully rewarding circular hiking route that weaves together natural scenery, colonial fortifications and some of the most picturesque views in all of Antigua. The trail runs through the Shirley Heights area, connecting Freeman's Bay at the bottom with Shirley Heights Lookout at the top — roughly one kilometre in length, with the experience varying considerably depending on the direction taken. Hikers approaching from Shirley Heights Lookout will find a relatively gentle descent, with one section of larger rocks to navigate before reaching the road near Freeman's Bay. Those starting from the bottom, just up the road from Freeman's Bay and the former Galleon Beach Resort, face a more immediate climb — but are rewarded with a refreshing swim at the bay upon return. The trail connects naturally with several other routes in the area, including the Carpenters Rock Trail and the Jones Valley Trail, making it an ideal starting point for a longer exploration of the region. The broader trail network here passes through an area rich in historical significance, with colonial-era fortifications, the Blockhouse ruins and the Dow's Hill Interpretation Centre all accessible from nearby paths. For those with an interest in the local flora, the Environmental Awareness Group (EAG) produces an illustrated hiking guide covering many of the plant species found along these trails. Hikers are advised to wear good footwear with a firm sole, carry sufficient drinking water, and set out either early in the morning or in the late afternoon to avoid the most intense midday heat. The area is home to cassie trees with long thorns that can penetrate lightweight soles, and tree roots along the lower sections of the track require careful footing, particularly in the dry season.
